The school started in a small building at Amalapuri. Later the number of students has increased tremendously and as a result of it we shifted the school to a much more big old building that had been used as a hostel, at Devagiri. Now the Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment, Government of India financially supports the day today functions of the institution. We have started a vocational rehabilitation centre for people with mental disabilities of eighteen years old and above. The rehabilitation centre has been producing files, paper bags, greeting cards etc. This rehabilitation centre is working as a place to work and earn for the people with mental retardation.

Ashakiran, the pioneer organisation in the field of rehabilitation of people with mental disabilities in Calicut City, Kerala, India, was formed by the CMI fathers on a one day seminar at Chavara Hall, Amalapuri on 13th November, 1982 at which 105 mentally retarded children with their parents were present. Ashakiran had birth from this one-day seminar.
